Czech Republic
Decisions on record.

Voting against an immediate humanitarian ceasefire

Officials at the relevant dates

Petr Fiala, prime minister; Jan Lipavský, foreign minister, in the 2023 government. [S118, S116]

The recorded vote

The Czech Republic voted against the General Assembly’s 12 December 2023 resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, compliance with international law and unconditional hostage release. [S116]

Diplomatic opposition

The government opposed an available collective political call for civilian protection and a ceasefire. This was a negative General Assembly vote, not a Security Council veto.

The alternative

Support the text, or abstain while pursuing amendments. Ministers could explain how their preferred alternative would protect civilians more effectively.

Limits of the record

General Assembly resolutions carry political weight but do not operate like enforceable Security Council measures. This vote alone does not establish a particular arms transfer or criminal responsibility.
